Alastar Greig retiring as head of SAC veterinary services stresses the need for bio-security and to use 'best practice' routines.
When asked what successes there have been in animal health improvement in his time, Alastar Greig, talked of cattle diseases such as bovine viral diarrhoea, an insidious infection that can cause massive losses; rotovirus and IBR - a respiratory infection - that can all now be controlled by vaccines.
The way forward for animal health is for farmers to treat their farm as their fortress and protect it at all times. Far too many still associate biosecurity only with foot-and-mouth disease.
He also believes every farmer should have an animal health plan and avoid routine dosing and injecting on the "aye been, so why change" principle, read more.
